  4 ÷ 0 = No Answer. Why?

A ÷ B = C : C × B = A.

4 ÷ 0 = ? : ? × 0 = 4.

There's No Number Solves This.

If a Moon is bigger than a Planet, why can't it be one?
_____________________________________________________

Moons cannot be planets because:

A) They weren't formed like planets. Take our moon, for example, it was formed by a planet called Thea which slammed in to Earth. It hit us at a precise angle enabling life on Earth and a moon to be formed from the debris.

B) They might've been formed outside of our Solar System. Deimos and Phobos, Mars' two moons are both captured asteroids thus not being spherical. Phobos will crash in to Mars whereas Deimos is spiralling out of it's gravity and will continue it's cosmic journey. This is going to happen to our moon too. But Neptune's Moon, Triton, is a different story.

C) They are in reverse-orbit. Neptune had about 20 original sattelites or objects that orbit a planet. Triton was a captured asteroid and was pulled in by Neptune's gravitational pull. This flung out many of Neptune's original sattelites leaving it with 8, including Triton. The moon orbited the planet the 'wrong-way round' compared with the others. The original sattelites are now out of our Solar System.

For an extra source see one of my posts:

Remember Planets orbit the Sun. Moons orbit other planets.

Are there any Green Stars?
_____________________________

This does, indeed sound like a stupid question but the answer is actually yes. Our eyes cannot see Green Light coming off the stars due to the way Humans evolved. Eventually, if we continue to evolve, we maybe able to see Green Stars. Our Sun in fact is Green, it appears to us as Yellow, others are too, they appear white. There are also Purple stars, again, our eyes aren't used to that colour and amount of light. Therefore we cannot look directly at the sun without going blind with a telescope, or even sun glasses. You will need a special sun filter for that kind of job.

Can I see a Comet from Earth?
________________________________

Yes. You can see a comet from Earth. The most reliable comet is Halley's Comet (discovered by astronmer Edmond Halley). Issac Newton wrote his book the Principa in the 1600's. His publisher and editor, Edmond Halley calculated that this comet would take 74-75 years to complete a full orbit of the solar system, and would return to Earth in that time. He knew this because he thought he had seen two comets in succesion in 1680 and 1681 which proved to be the same comet after passing behind the sun. His theory was proved correct in 1759, a year later than his estimation. It was seen by an Italian Farmer. It has also been seen on 20th April 1910, and on 9th February 1988 and is next due on 26th July 2061, so keep that date for your diary! There were other dates inbetween, I just listed the modern ones.

Another famous comet is Halle Bopp, seen in 1996 and 1997 from Earth. It was detected last year, in 2010 about 30.7AU from the Sun. Larger telescopes will be able to see Halle Bopp until 2020, and the next perhilion passage is in 4385... sorry, unfortunately that date won't be for your diary. Halle Bopp was a spectacular sight and some of us including me, will never live to see it once. It was discovered by Adam Halle and Thomas Bopp in 1995. Another discovery about Halle Bopp was that it's tail was not made from just ice, but also Sodium. The comet was able to be seen with the naked eye in the Northern Hemisphere from late 1996 to late 1997. In the Southern Hemisphere it could be seen in the remainder of 1997. It smashed the record of the longest seen comet which was 18 and a half months. The previous record was 9 months set by the Great Comet of 1811.

Another comet which was discovered was Tempel I and NASA crashed their probe, Deep Impact, into Tempel I in 2005.

Remember to look out for Halley's Comet in 2061 and an asteroid will also become visible from Earth in 2029!

Why is Pluto not a planet?
____________________________

Pluto was discovered in the 1930's by mistake. It was considered as a planet by the astronomer who found it even though he or she hadn't collected enough data about it. In the 1950's, when there were more powerful telescopes, we saw it's moon, Charon (pronounced Ch-are-on). That was thought to be bigger than Pluto, but orbited around Pluto so it couldn't be a planet. A planet must surely dominate it's moon, shouldn't it? In 2005, another few objects were found such as Varuna EKB, Sedna and Eris. Scientists were asking; "Are all these planets?" In 2006, there was a huge conference about what a planet really is. Pluto and it's friends didn't make it because:

1. Pluto had an egg-shaped orbit around the sun, not a circular one.

2. Pluto was actually captured by the sun. It doesn't have enough gravity to crush rocks together that far away.

3. It wasn't really big. Ganymede, Jupiter's biggest moon is bigger than Mercury, but Mercury wasn't disqualified because it complied with the other categories. Our Moon is much bigger than Pluto.

Pluto and the other objects were classified as dwarf planets. I'm afraid no other planet has been discovered in the Kuiper Belt. The Eight Planets are:

Mercury (Rock), Venus (Rock), Earth (Rock), Mars (Rock), Jupiter (Gas Giant), Saturn (Gas Giant), Uranus (Ice Giant) and Neptune (Ice Giant).

So we can find more information about Pluto, NASA has launched the New Horizons probe, which was launched in 2006. It is set to reach Pluto in July 2015.
