It is very easy to explain why the octopus Paul always came to his choice. He has a strong preference for bright colors like yellow. The German flag doesn't got really bright colors. The Spanish flag is red and bright yellow and provided a much more attractive option than the German flag. This also explains why the octopus chose Spain instead The Netherlands. The Dutch flag contains only red. White and blue aren't clear underwater. Also, the Spanish insignia in the flag looks like a tasty shrimp or other invertebrates.

Still believe in Paul after this :-)?
