He means that at places with many vertical thin lines (ex. the beginning, below your house) you could've put very long thin lines horizontally.

what place that you mean for the 8 horizontaly?

and you know why ? you failled vertically and used about 60 lines while you could fill horizontally and use 8 lines.

So... can you do so ?
