I don't know, I've never met him online here. I've seen some of his posts on the Path4Mouse thread.

I cannot believe next Thursday is Thanksgiving. Can you? And this year will be over in a month. Wow, I'm shocked at how fast time is going by. It's most likely because we're having fun or either staying busy.

Valentine's Day
Coolguy52 5 months ago
They are the same holiday in that case, just different names. They originally were for remembering the end of WWI, but later were adapted to pay respects to all veterans of war for the respective country. Tonight is a ‘festival’ that Americans don’t have, Bonfire Night.

There are of course things that Americans have that the British don’t. Thanksgiving for example, but also the more obvious Fourth of July celebrations to commemorate American Independence. You can imagine that’s not exactly worldwide - and of course not in the UK xD
chris3000 5 months ago
Wow, that's something new that I've learned today. Thanks CG52. Your country must have different holidays than the U.S.
Coolguy52 5 months ago
Interesting. In the UK we have Armistice Day which is essentially the same.

It's already November 4th. Veteran's day will be next Monday, the 11th.

I guess it’s just a lot of calculations to make it work and many places you can mess up. I will say that if it was much bigger it would likely have taken a lot longer, and possibly I would have given up. I don’t give up very easily, and calculating that sort of expression is quite a procedural exercise so in a way it can be kind of relaxing.
chris3000 5 months ago
Wow, incredible....that's correct. I did it on my graphing calculator too and that's the same number you got.

That took a while - and is just about the limit of what i can be bothered doing by hand:

The answer:
SPOILER
85^10=19,687,440,434,072,265,625

The method:
SPOILER
With a huge computation like this, I break it down into different parts. I noted that 85^10=(85^5)^2=(85^4*85)^2=((85^2)^2*85)^2, then computed 85^2 as 7,225.

The method I used for squaring each of these bigger numbers is to break it down into two sections. In general you can let N=A*10^n+B and then compute N^2 as (A^2*10^2n+B^2)+2*A*B*10^n, which are easier calculations to perform in my opinion.

85^4=7,225^2=(7,200^2+25^2)+7,200*50=51,840,625+360,000=52,200,625

85^5=52,200,625*85=4,437,053,125

4,437,053,125^2=((44,370)^2*10^10+(53,125)^2)+2*44,370*53125*10^5

44,370^2=100*4,437^2=100*((44^2*10,000+37^2)+2*44*37*100)=100*((19,361,369)+(325,600))=1,968,696,900

53,125^2=(53^2*10^6+125^2)+2*53*125*10^3=(2,809,015,625)+13,250,000=2,822,265,625

2*44,370*53,125=44,370*106,250=4,437,000,000+266,220,000+8,874,000+2,218,500=4,714,312,500

Finally:

85^10=4,437,053,125^2=(1,968,696,900*10^10+2,822,265,625)+4,714,312,500*10^5=(19,686,969,002,822,265,625)+471,431,250,000,000=19,687,440,434,072,265,625

I hope I copied all of my working correctly, as that took a bit...
